Day Forty-three – Today is day forty-three. As it happens, day forty-three falls on a Monday and for some reason people just don’t like Monday’s or have been taught that Monday’s are supposed to be dreaded days. Now, I think much of that has to do with the idea of “going back to the old grind” of the work week after having the weekend off…or back to school after a weekend of…well…not having to sit in class, do math or diagram sentences. Two days is apparently enough for us to get out of that routine and move comfortably into the “not working” mentality. Maybe work and school or whatever causes us to have “the Mondaze” is just not really where we want to be and every day, Monday through Friday, is a hard fought battle just to exist and keep pushing on, until the time that it ends.
I think most of us have felt this way at some point, but I think for the Christian things must be different. It may be just as hard for us the switch in and out of the routine of the workplace or school, but there are several factors I think that make it so much easier. First, we have just celebrated the Lord’s Day and it ought to be for us a recharge so that we can face that next day not just to do our work, but to face our spiritual foe with success. It ought to place an immeasurable joy and peace within our hearts that cannot be removed our touched by the world, let alone a return to work.
Second, since God tells us to do well in all that we “find to do with our hands” we ought to cherish our ability and opportunity to work. If God expected even the slaves among his people to do their work without grumbling and complaining, when the master was looking and when he wasn’t, then I am pretty sure he has the same expectation for us. Christians ought to be a model of good work ethic.
Third, the workplace is one of the places that will take up the bulk of our time. That being said, it is the place where the manifestation of our transformation can be the greatest. What does our attitude say about He whom we serve? What does our manner and work ethic say about our commitment to Him? Don’t be the “Jekyll and Hyde” of faith…kind hearted and love among the saints, but grumpy, mean and nasty in the workplace, simply because it’s work…yes, even if it is not your favorite or ideal job.
This transformation we are going through is pervasive. It will include the work. It may be a challenge, but let your light shine on this Monday…at school….at work…wherever you are. Today is day Forty- three. Today is the first opportunity of the week to let the light shine with a full spiritual battery recharge.
